Quick answer: In Indonesia a spouse needs an E31B family permit and each unmarried child under 18 needs an E31E permit. Both are sponsored by the family member who holds a KITAS — for most of our clients, the Investor KITAS (E28A). Family permits are issued electronically after an online e-Visa approval, they cannot last longer than the sponsor's permit, and family members cannot work on them. IndoDesk arranges each family permit for USD 800 per person in 4–7 working days.

1. Which Permit Does Each Family Member Need?

Indonesia does not issue one "family visa". Each person gets their own stay permit (KITAS), linked to the sponsor's permit:

Family memberPermitWho qualifies
SpouseE31BLegally married husband or wife of the KITAS holder
ChildE31EUnmarried child under 18
The sponsor (investor)E28AShareholder who personally holds shares worth at least IDR 10 billion in a PT PMA

You may see the code "E38A" on older websites. It does not exist — the correct codes for family members are E31B and E31E.

A family permit depends entirely on the sponsor's own KITAS. For a business owner, that usually means the Investor KITAS (E28A), which requires a personal shareholding of at least IDR 10 billion in your PT PMA and proof of funds of USD 2,000. The 2025 cut in the company paid-up capital minimum (to IDR 2.5 billion) did not lower this immigration threshold — see our minimum capital guide.

In practice we apply for the family permits right after the sponsor's KITAS is issued, or plan both together so the family can travel at the same time. If you are still setting up your company, read the Investor KITAS guide first.

3. Documents and Apostille

For each family member we normally need:

  • Passport with comfortable validity beyond the permit period (we check this before filing).
  • Marriage certificate for a spouse, or birth certificate for a child, showing the relationship to the sponsor.
  • The sponsor's passport and KITAS details.
  • A recent photo that meets e-Visa requirements.
  • A sponsor letter, which IndoDesk prepares for you.

Civil documents issued abroad must be authenticated before Indonesian immigration accepts them. Indonesia joined the Apostille Convention on 4 June 2022, so the rules depend on where your documents were issued:

Issued inWhat you need
PakistanApostille (Pakistan has been a member since 9 March 2023) — no embassy legalisation
IndiaApostille from the Ministry of External Affairs (India has been a member since 2005)
United Arab EmiratesConsular legalisation — the UAE is not an Apostille member

If your marriage or birth certificate was issued in Pakistan or India but you live in the UAE, the document still follows the rules of the country that issued it. We check every document before anything is filed, so a missing stamp does not cost you weeks.

4. The Process, Step by Step

1

Document check

We review passports, certificates and apostilles, and confirm each person's permit type.

2

e-Visa application

We file each family member's application online with the sponsor letter and documents.

3

Approval

The e-Visa is approved and sent by email — typically 4–7 working days with IndoDesk.

4

Arrival

Each family member enters Indonesia on the approved e-Visa within its validity period.

5

Electronic KITAS

The electronic stay permit is issued at the border on arrival — there is no physical card to collect.

Because the permit is electronic, the family does not need a separate trip to an immigration office on arrival. Pakistani nationals cannot use Visa on Arrival, so every family member must hold the approved e-Visa before boarding.

5. Key Rules: Validity, Work and Travel

  • Validity is tied to the sponsor. A family permit can never outlast the sponsor's own permit. If the sponsor's KITAS ends or is cancelled, the family permits end too.
  • No work. Family members cannot work on an E31B or E31E permit. A spouse who wants to work needs their own permit — for example a work KITAS (E23) sponsored by an employer, or their own Investor KITAS if they personally hold qualifying shares.
  • Children growing up. E31E is for unmarried children under 18. A child who turns 18 or marries no longer qualifies, so plan the next permit before that date.
  • Overstay is expensive. The overstay fine is IDR 1,000,000 per day, per person — keep every family member's expiry date in one calendar.
  • Permanent stay. The investor may apply for a KITAP (permanent stay permit) after 3 consecutive years on an Investor KITAS, subject to a ministry recommendation and investment requirements.

6. Extending Family Permits

Family permits are extended inside Indonesia, normally alongside the sponsor's extension. Since 29 May 2025, every stay-permit extension requires an in-person visit to an immigration office for a photo and interview — and that applies to each family member, children included. We book the appointments together so the family makes one visit, and we send reminders well before each expiry date.

7. What It Costs

Example: an investor with a spouse and two children would budget from USD 1,200 for the Investor KITAS plus 3 × USD 800 for the family permits — from USD 3,600 in total. 8. Frequently Asked Questions

What permit does my spouse need to live in Indonesia?

An E31B family permit, sponsored by you as the KITAS holder. Your spouse applies through the e-Visa system and receives an electronic stay permit on arrival.

What permit do my children need?

Each unmarried child under 18 needs an E31E permit, sponsored by the parent who holds the KITAS.

Can my spouse work in Indonesia on a family KITAS?

No. Family members cannot work on E31B or E31E permits. To work, your spouse needs their own permit, such as a work KITAS (E23) or an Investor KITAS based on their own qualifying shareholding.

How long is a family KITAS valid?

It cannot last longer than the sponsor's permit. It is extended in Indonesia, and since 29 May 2025 each extension needs an in-person immigration visit.

Do Pakistani marriage and birth certificates need legalisation?

They need an apostille. Pakistan joined the Apostille Convention effective 9 March 2023, so apostilled documents need no embassy legalisation. UAE-issued documents still need consular legalisation.

How much does a family KITAS cost with IndoDesk?

USD 800 per person, with approval in 4–7 working days. A family of four with an Investor KITAS starts from USD 3,600 in total.
