Quick answer: A PT PMA opens its corporate bank account after incorporation, once it has its deed, Ministry of Law approval (SK AHU), NIB and company NPWP. Banks verify every director and authorised signatory: for foreigners that means a passport plus an Indonesian immigration document, and many banks list the KITAS. Some banks accept a representative with a power of attorney, but plan for your director to be in Indonesia. Once the account is open, the IDR 2.5 billion (about USD 140,000) paid-up capital is deposited, and it must stay in the company account for at least 12 months unless it is spent on assets, buildings or operations.

1. Where the Bank Account Fits in Your Setup

The bank account is not the first step. A bank can only open an account for a company that legally exists, so it comes after registration and before the capital deposit:

StepWhat happensTypical timing
1. Deed of establishmentA notary signs the deed setting out shareholders, directors, commissioners and capital7–8 working days with IndoDesk
2. SK AHUThe Ministry of Law approves the company as a legal entity
3. NIB and NPWPOSS issues the business identification number; the company receives its 16-digit tax number
4. Corporate bank accountOpened with the documents below; the bank verifies directors and the beneficial ownerDepends on the bank and on when your director can attend
5. Capital depositIDR 2.5 billion paid in; proof of payment goes to the notary and the Ministry of LawAfter the account is open

The full registration process is in our PT PMA registration guide. Nothing has to be paid into the company before it exists.

2. Documents Banks Ask For

Every bank publishes its own list, but they follow the same rule: OJK Regulation 8/2023 on customer due diligence. For a company that is not a micro or small business — and a PT PMA always counts as a large business under BKPM Regulation 5/2025 — the bank must collect the articles of association, the business licence, a description of the business, the management structure, the ownership structure and the directors' identity documents. In practice that means:

DocumentWhat it isWhere you get it
Deed of establishment and articles of association (and any amendments)The company's founding deedYour notary, at registration
SK AHUMinistry of Law approval of the companyIssued during registration
NIBBusiness identification number and licenceOSS, during registration
Company NPWPThe company's tax numberIssued during registration
IDs of directors, commissioners and signatoriesPassport and immigration document for foreignersYour own documents
Shareholder and beneficial-owner detailsWho owns and controls the companyFrom the deed, plus a declaration
Application form and signature cardThe bank's own formsThe bank

Three banks' published lists, for comparison:

  • BCA lists ID and NPWP for all management and all shareholders, the company NPWP, the deed and articles (with amendments), the deed showing the current management, the Ministry of Law approval, the NIB and other licences. It also allows the account to be opened through a representative holding a power of attorney.
  • Bank Mandiri lists the deed and amendments, the deed with the current management, the articles of association, NIB, company NPWP, the IDs of the directors and commissioners involved, and a power of attorney where a representative acts.
  • CIMB Niaga lists the application form, signature card, deed and Ministry of Law approval, articles and amendments, NIB, business licences, NPWP, documents showing the individual ultimate beneficial owner, and IDs of the authorised persons, management and beneficial owner.

Lists change, so confirm with the branch before you go. If your shareholders are foreign individuals without an Indonesian tax number, ask the bank in advance what it accepts in place of an NPWP.

3. Foreign Directors and Signatories: Passport, KITAS and Attendance

Under OJK Regulation 8/2023, the identity document for a foreign individual is a passport together with an immigration document under Indonesian immigration law. The regulation does not name the KITAS, but banks do: BCA and Bank Mandiri both list a stay permit (KITAS or KITAP) for foreign customers, and many banks ask for a foreign director's KITAS before they will add that director as a signatory.

The bank must verify the documents and the identity of anyone acting for the company — it may also interview them — and finish that verification before the account relationship starts (or within 3 working days under its risk procedures). Some banks, such as BCA, accept a representative with a power of attorney to submit the application, but the directors and signatories are still verified.

What this means for founders abroad: do not plan around a fully remote account opening. The usual sequence is to register the company, have it sponsor your Investor KITAS (it needs a personal shareholding of at least IDR 10 billion), enter Indonesia once on the approved e-Visa, and open the account while you are there. If your shareholding is below the Investor KITAS threshold, discuss the bank route with us early — the answer depends on who will sign for the company.

4. Beneficial Owner: What the Bank Will Ask

Banks must identify the company's beneficial owner — the real person behind the shares — and get a statement that the owner's identity and source of funds are true. Under Presidential Regulation 13/2018, a beneficial owner of a PT includes anyone who holds more than 25% of the shares, voting rights or profits, can appoint or dismiss the directors and commissioners, or otherwise controls the company. A bank that doubts the beneficial owner's identity must refuse the account. If your PT PMA is owned through a holding company, bring the holding company's ownership chain down to the individuals.

5. Rupiah or USD Account?

A PT PMA can hold both. Large banks offer business current accounts (giro) in Rupiah and in foreign currencies, including USD. The published terms of two of them, as shown on their websites in November 2026:

AccountOpening depositMinimum balanceMonthly fee
BCA giro (IDR)IDR 1,000,000IDR 1,000,000IDR 30,000 (without card)
BCA giro (USD)USD 1,000USD 500USD 5
Mandiri giro (IDR)IDR 1,000,000IDR 1,000,000IDR 25,000
Mandiri giro (USD)USD 500USD 500USD 5

Both banks charge a fee if the balance falls below the minimum. These are bank charges, not IndoDesk prices, and banks change them — check the current terms when you open. Most companies keep a Rupiah account for local payments and taxes, and add a USD account if they invoice or receive investment in dollars.

6. The Capital Deposit and the 12-Month Rule

The minimum issued and paid-up capital of a PT PMA is IDR 2.5 billion per company (BKPM Regulation 5/2025, Article 26). It is the company's own money, paid in after incorporation, and it is used for the business — it is not a fee.

  • Proof of payment. Under Ministry of Law Regulation 49/2025, cash capital is evidenced by a bank deposit slip or a bank statement in the company's name (the regulation also allows a joint account in the founders' names or a deposit statement signed by the directors, founders and commissioners). Your notary keeps the proof. Under Government Regulation 8/2021 the proof is submitted to the Ministry of Law electronically within 60 days of the deed — your notary confirms the current deadline when the deed is signed.
  • The 12-month rule. Under BKPM Regulation 5/2025, Article 27, the paid-up capital cannot be moved out of the company's account for at least 12 months, except to buy assets, construct buildings or fund the company's operations. The company confirms this commitment in OSS.
  • The investment plan is separate. The plan of more than IDR 10 billion per business activity per location is realised over time and reported in quarterly LKPM reports — it is not deposited upfront.

The minimum capital guide explains the capital rules in detail, and the PT PMA cost breakdown separates your own capital from setup fees.

7. A Realistic Sequence for Founders Abroad

WhenWhat you doWhere you are
Week 1–2Sign an apostilled power of attorney; company registered (deed, SK AHU, NIB, NPWP)At home
Week 2–3The PT PMA files your Investor KITAS e-Visa (4–7 working days with IndoDesk)At home
Week 3–4Enter Indonesia on the e-Visa; your electronic KITAS is issued at the borderIndonesia

Book the bank appointment before you fly and bring the original documents. IndoDesk prepares the document set and tells you which originals the chosen bank wants to see.

8. Common Mistakes

  • Treating the capital as "on paper". It is deposited into the company's account and must stay there for 12 months unless used for assets, buildings or operations.
  • Planning a fully remote opening. A representative may submit the application at some banks, but directors and signatories are still verified, and many banks want a KITAS first.
  • Confusing the two IDR thresholds. IDR 2.5 billion is the company's paid-up capital; the Investor KITAS needs a personal shareholding of IDR 10 billion.
  • Leaving the beneficial owner unclear. Holding structures without a documented chain down to individuals are a common reason for delays.
  • Moving capital out early. Transfers outside the permitted uses within 12 months break the commitment made in OSS.

9. Frequently Asked Questions

When can a PT PMA open a bank account?

After incorporation, once it has its deed, SK AHU (Ministry of Law approval), NIB and company NPWP. A bank cannot open an account for a company that does not yet exist.

Can I open the corporate account without coming to Indonesia?

Do not plan on it. Some banks accept a representative with a power of attorney, but every director and signatory is still verified, and many banks want a foreign director's KITAS first. Most founders open the account on the trip when their KITAS is issued.

Do foreign directors need a KITAS to be a signatory?

OJK rules require a passport plus an Indonesian immigration document for foreign individuals, and banks such as BCA and Mandiri list a KITAS or KITAP. In practice, expect the bank to ask for the director's KITAS.

Do I have to pay the IDR 2.5 billion before registering the company?

No. Nothing has to be paid before incorporation. The capital is deposited after the company exists — usually into its own bank account — and proof of payment is kept by the notary and submitted to the Ministry of Law.

Can I spend the paid-up capital?

Yes, on the business. For the first 12 months it cannot be moved out of the company's account except to buy assets, construct buildings or fund operations (BKPM Regulation 5/2025, Article 27).

Can a PT PMA have a USD account?

Yes. Major banks offer business current accounts in USD and other currencies alongside Rupiah. For example, BCA publishes a USD 1,000 opening deposit and Mandiri USD 500 (November 2026).
